North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo has encouraged employees in his office to serve with passion and lead by example, saying that the Rebranding, Repositioning and Renewal of the province was a difficult task that required diligent civil servants.
Mahumapelo was speaking at an event in Mahikeng, where Office of the Premier employees who served government for more than twenty years were awarded long service certificates.
“Building a non-racial, non-sexist, united and prosperous South Africa is not easy. It requires commitment. We therefore thank you for your effort, commitment, and contribution in ensuring that we provide quality service to our people,” said Mahumapelo.
Mahumapelo took the opportunity to reiterate his vision for the province, saying that his administration was steadfast in pursuing the National Development Plan through the Rebranding, Repositioning and Renewal strategy.
He explained that the RRR approach was anchored on five concretes, namely ACT (Agriculture, Culture and Tourism); VTSD (Villages, Townships and Small Dorpies; RHR (Reconciliation, Healing and Renewal); Setsokotsane and the Saamwerk-Saamtrek philosophy.
Borrowing from Setswana idiomatic expression “Bana ba motho ba kgaogana tlhogwana ya tsie,” Mahumapelo said he was determined to ensure that all residents of Bokone Bophirima benefit from opportunities made available by government.
He emphasised that his administration was prioritising the economic development of the province with special focus on villages, townships and small dorpies, using what he termed “bietjie bietjie maak meer economic system.”
Mahumapelo said the move would help to create jobs and address the problem of unequal distribution of resources and services.
Director General Dr Lydia Sebego, who also received certificate for long service, echoed Premier Mahumapelo’s sentiments that all employees including cleaners and those in entry-level positions were important and highly valued by the administration.
“I take this opportunity to remind each and every one of us that we are all important to the administration of Bokone Bophirima. I took time off recently to meet with our secretaries and PAs. I listened to them making inputs but what fulfilled me most was the ambition that I found in all of them. I told them to work hard in order to achieve what they want. The fabric of human nature is hard work.”
Dr Sebego also encouraged employees to spend their Christmas holidays relaxing with families so that they return to work rejuvenated in 2017.
“Spend time with your families and make sure that you relax and recharge so that when you come back to fight poverty, inequality and unemployment your swords are sharpened,” said Sebego.
One of the employees who received the long service certificate, Fanie van Zyl said he felt honoured.
“It has been 22 years of uninterrupted service in the provincial government. It is a privilege and honour to serve the people of South Africa,” he said.
The event was attended by, among others, Head of Ikatisong School of Government Professor Job Mokgoro,Deputy Director General for Planning, Performance Monitoring, Evaluation and Intervention Jimmy Mawelela and Deputy Director General of Administration Dr Moeletsi Leballo.
