Torching of Koster family unspeakable – Premier Mahumapelo said...

Koster – Premier Supra Mahumapelo has on behalf of Bokone-Bophirima Provincial Government slammed the incident in which seven out of ten family members were killed after a shack wherein they were sleeping was set alight at Senthumole Section, Reagile location in Koster.

According to the police, the victims of this shocking incident which happened in the early hours of today, are a 75-year old grandmother, five children aged between eight and twelve years, and a 3-year old grandchild. Only three family members survived this ordeal, amongst them a 40-year old woman who was since admitted to hospital for treatment of burn wounds.  

Premier Mahumapelo who condemned this incident by describing it as not only distressing but unspeakable, has offered profound sympathy and deepest care to the deceased’s families, friends and neighbours.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to the family of those who have been killed, and as we extend our earnest condolences, we wish them strength to bear this great pain”, said Mahumapelo who also wished the admitted woman a speedy recovery.

The Provincial Government has started offering necessary support to the family members who escaped this incident, in the form of trauma counselling. The police are already questioning a 49-year-old man regarding this incident.

Expressing confidence on how the SAPS will handle this case, Premier Mahumapelo reiterated the call for community members to remain calm, and allow the police to continue with their investigation.

During his State of the Province Address, Premier Mahumapelo pronounced that a new social mobilisation ten (10) Point Campaign Plan will be launched this month as part of Setsokotsane and Reconciliation, Healing and Renewal Programme, this in an effort to deal directly with societal issues affecting our people on a daily basis. This Campaign Plan entails amongst others ensuring a crime free society and creating awareness on issues of women and children abuse.
